How to Obtain Hungary's Golden Visa?

Obtaining a residence permit and subsequent immigration to Hungary is carried out based on a D visa. The government relaunched this program in 2024.

Residence Permit Duration and Investor Requirements

The Hungarian residence permit by investment is valid for 10 years. Upon its expiration, you can extend your residence permit. Foreign investors must meet the following requirements:

Be at least 18 years old.
Not hold EU citizenship. The program is only available to non-EU residents or those with a second passport from a non-EU country.
Have a legal source of income.
Have health insurance.

Foreign investors also have the right to include family members in their applications. You can apply for a residence permit for your spouse and children under 18 years old , as well as children aged 18-25 if they are students, unmarried, and financially dependent on you. Additionally, you can include your parents in the application if they are retirees and financially dependent on you.

Where and How Much to Invest to Obtain a Residence Permit?

To obtain a golden visa, you must invest at least €250,000 in one of the following sectors:

Investment in a real estate fund – from €250,000 in a state-approved fund.
Real estate purchase – You can buy residential real estate, but you must first obtain approval from the Land Committee. The minimum investment is €500,000.
One-time donation to any Hungarian higher education institution – Minimum amount is €1,000,000.

The investment must be made within 3 months after visa approval.

What Additional Costs Does the Investor Bear?

To obtain a Hungarian residence permit, you also need to pay an administrative fee. The fee rates are as follows:

65,000 EUR for a family of 4 or less with minor children.
10,000 EUR for each additional family member, starting from the fifth.
15,000 EUR for a child aged 18-25.

How to Obtain Hungarian Citizenship?

The conditions for obtaining citizenship in Hungary are pretty attractive. First, you need to obtain permanent residence (PR). Before you can get PR in Hungary, you must have lived in the country for at least 3 years. A year of residence is counted if you stay in the country for at least 183 calendar days per year (i.e., you are considered a Hungarian resident).
To obtain citizenship, you must live in the country for 8 years and hold PR. It is important to note that you cannot leave Hungary for more than 45 days per year during this period. Additionally, to obtain a Hungarian passport, you must pass an exam on the Hungarian language and the country’s history.

You should prepare a document package to obtain an investor visa and a residence permit. These include:

ID and passport;
Application form in the prescribed format;
Two photographs;
Marriage certificate (if applicable);
Birth certificates of children (if applicable);
Resume (CV) – for the investor and all adult family members;
Medical insurance;
Written commitment to fulfill the investment conditions;
Proof of legal origin of funds;
Document confirming the completion of the investment.

Hungarian immigration authorities may also request additional documents on a case-by-case basis.
