How to Obtain Citizenship in Ireland?
Let’s explore how to acquire Irish citizenship. Foreign nationals who have lived in Ireland for at least five years are eligible to apply for a passport. After meeting this residency requirement, you may obtain permanent residency (PR) and later citizenship.
An essential requirement for Irish citizenship is passing an English language proficiency test. Applicants must take an exam and obtain a certification, which is included in the application package. A minimum score of 150 points is required. If you fail on your first attempt, you can retake the test.
To apply for a passport, you must submit a completed application form to the Irish Department of Justice, along with the following documents:
- Proof of identity: Both a national ID card and a passport.
- Proof of legal residence: Such as a residency permit or work visa.
- Criminal record clearance certificate.
- Documents confirming marital status.
- Four photographs.
- Proof of residence in Ireland.
- Financial solvency documents.
- Written declaration of intent to remain in Ireland.
- Autobiography.
- Medical certificate.
- Letters of recommendation: At least two from Irish citizens who are not related to the applicant.
- Additional documents: May be requested on a case-by-case basis.
Applicants must also pay government fees. The citizenship application fee is €278 for adults and €145 for children, and a receipt must be included in the application package. Additionally, a fee for the passport itself is required: €75 for adults and €25 for children.
The Irish Department of Justice will review your citizenship application and notify you of the decision. The processing time is six months. If approved, you will receive an electronic invitation to a citizenship ceremony, which is held several times a year. After taking the oath of allegiance, you will be issued a naturalization certificate, enabling you to apply for a passport.
